And may your holiday season be filled with family, friends, and laughter! Here are some things to keep in mind as you celebrate the holidays this year. Enjoy the holiday season! And don’t forget to share the holiday spirit! Let’s start our holiday season off by celebrating our union!
IBEW union
IBEW union members are dealing with the COVID-19 crisis, which has impacted their health and lives in a variety of ways. In the July issue of The Electrical Worker, IBEW members in New York City were the focus of a feature story. Local 3 has experienced many crises and has been on the front lines. Here are some of the stories that highlight the ongoing challenges our members face.
Members of IBEW Local 410 in Baltimore, Maryland, have signed a multimillion dollar project labor agreement with the city’s municipal utility company. Their efforts have contributed to the renovation of the museum. And their local president, Tim Burkhart, was deployed to Afghanistan and used his union training to help save lives. Also, Tampa, Florida, member Fernando Guillen is a journeyman inside wireman. He is also a teacher of electricity at Plant City High School. Recently, he was named the 2019 Electrician of the Year by Klein Tools.
IBEW activists in Idaho are actively engaging in the reconciliation process between the railroad industry and the IBEW. In addition, IBEW activists have played a crucial role in bridging the divide in the state. The IBEW’s work in Michigan is also making an impact as a labor commissioner. Local 275 in Muskegon, Mich., recently signed several IBEW legislative priorities into law. In Toronto, GO Transit has committed to stop using diesel locomotives, and the union believes this decision could mean meaningful long-term employment for over 1,500 members.
Pro-union lawmakers in the U.S. House have passed the Protect the Right to Organize Act (PRO Act) to make it easier for working people to join unions. However, there is a downside to this legislation. In addition to reducing the benefits of union membership, the PRO Act will also cut benefits from millions of injured workers’ Social Security Disability Insurance. Union activists and advocates are calling the federal plan a vicious attack on the most vulnerable Americans. And the IBEW is doing its part to help the state legislature save clean energy jobs.
In addition to being an IBEW member, Jared Crast has been collecting items for comfort cases for sexual assault survivors. A local women’s committee in Kamloops, British Columbia, is making a difference for their members and the community. The IBEW has a college-education program for its members. In addition to the Union Plus scholarship program, the IBEW union has been actively supporting the development of a clean energy economy.
